Academic Success

What is Academic Success?

As a Professional Learning Community (PLC), Will C. Wood High School is focused on addressing the four key elements of a PLC:

  • What do students need to learn?
  • How do we know if students have learned?
  • What do we do if students haven't learned?
  • What do we do if students have learned?

Academic Success is one of our answers to the third question--What do we do if students haven't learned? It is a systematic academic intervention for any student who needs additional time and support to learn. Research shows that for an intervention to be effective it must adhere to the following criteria.

An effective academic intervention must be:

  • Timely: students receive intervention as soon as it is evident that they aren't learning
  • Systemwide: regardless of who the student's teacher is, every student is guaranteed this time and support
  • Directive: if a student is experiencing difficulty learning, additional time and support are not optional
  • Within the school day: students shouldn't be required to come outside of the school day for support
  • Conducted by the most qualified instructor: the student's teachers provide the intervention--not a third party

Academic Success meets this criteria.

 

How it Works: The Academic Success period rotates daily (never on Wednesdays) through all classes and then the cycle repeats throughout the semester. For example, in the above bell schedule, Monday would be Academic Success for Period 1, Tuesday for Period 2, Thursday for Period 3, and Friday for Period 4. The following week, Monday would be Academic Success for Period 5, and Tuesday for Period 6. The cycle would then repeat starting with Period 1 on Thursday, and so on. 

 

During Academic Success, students must work on the following:

  • Working with their teacher, reviewing or relearning a lesson.
  • Completing missing or incomplete assignments and/or assessments for that class.
  • Working on homework or practice assignments from another class.
  • Study and review silently.
  • Silent Reading
  • If the student is all caught up with their own work in that class, they may assist or tutor other students who need help.
  • Students may access instructional technology such as chromebooks, etc., to work on academic skills or practice (Khan Academy, etc.)
  • Help to tutor and support other students.
